Baccarat Vs. Blackjack
Baccarat and blackjack are two of the most widely played casino games but they are really different. Blackjack requires decision-making and at least some knowledge of basic strategy. However, Baccarat is a “bet and forget” game and your only decision is how much to wager. Both offer the perfect blend of great odds and entertaining gameplay. But which one is better? It depends on the player’s preferences and you may already like one game over the other. In this article, I will discuss the advantages, disadvantages, rules, and odds of both blackjack and baccarat. In the end, it is your call to decide which one is better.
Let me start by refreshing your memory on baccarat playing rules. Although Baccarat is a game of chance and involves no complicated strategy, you should know the basics. Do you remember what is the goal of Baccarat? The goal is to have a hand with a higher score. In baccarat, if you have 2 or 3 cards with a higher score, you win. It is a comparing card game played between two hands, the player and the banker. In this game, Aces are worth 1, tens and face cards are worth 0, and cards 2-9 are worth their face values. To play the game, you just need to go to the table and place your bet on either of the three outcomes: your hand winning, the banker’s hand winning, or a tie. You should know the rules. But you don’t need to memorize anything. If you play at a land-based casino, you can have a hard copy of the game rules. If you play online, you can download and keep it with you while playing.
Well, what is the goal of Blackjack? In a nutshell, the objective of this game is to beat the dealer! In other words, you should have two or more cards where the numerical value meets or is less than 21 while still being a higher value than the dealer. Remember, if you get a sum of 22 or higher, you are busted!
You already know that in Blackjack, you are playing against the dealer. This means that no matter how many people are at the table, the two hands in play are the dealer’s hand and the player’s(your) hand.
In blackjack, aces have a value of 1 or 11. Face cards and tens are worth 10, and cards 2-9 are worth their face values. Since this is the game of strategy, you need to learn the basic rules and understand how to apply different strategies. Here is a summary of basic blackjack rules:
- Each player starts with two cards. One of the dealer’s cards is hidden until the end.
- To Hit means you ask for another card. To Stand means you hold your total and end your turn.
- As I mentioned earlier, if you go over 21 you are busted and the dealer wins regardless of the dealer’s hand.
- If you are lucky enough and dealt 21 from the start (Ace & 10), you got a natural or blackjack.
- The dealer continues to hit until his/her cards total 17 or higher.
- Doubling is like a hit. But if you double, the bet is doubled and you only get one more card.
- You can split when you have two of the same card. In other words, the pair is split into two hands. If you split, your bet is doubled. Because each new hand is worth the original bet.
- Remember that you can only double/split on your first move, or first move of a hand created by a split.
- Remember, you cannot play on two aces after they are split.

House Edge Baccarat Vs. Blackjack
Obviously, the house advantage in Baccarat and Blackjack are not the same. Also, in baccarat, every bet has its own house edge. So, let me outline house edge differences in both games.
For baccarat, you have three options to bet on: The player hand, the banker hand, and the tie. The house advantage is 1.24% for the player hand, 1.06% for the banker hand, and 14.36% for the tie. Remember, if you bet on the Banker’s hand winning and win, you should pay a 5% commission on your winnings.
Conversely, the house edge for blackjack is much lower than it is for most casino games. But, you should be careful about the following points:
- If you play the basic strategy, the house edge will be around 0.5%.
- If you don’t play the basic strategy, the house advantage rises to around 2%. But be careful, if you are a malfunctioning player and you are terrible at the basic strategy, the house will have a 100% advantage against you. So, do your homework before placing your bets.
- The house edge varies based on game conditions and if the casino uses more decks of cards the house edge rises even more.
The house edge in different blackjack variants are as follows:
|Blackjack Variant||House Edge|
|Vegas Downtown Blackjack||0.39%|
|Vegas Strip Blackjack||0.48-0.72%|
Baccarat Vs. Blackjack Odds
Since the house edge differs in the two games, the payouts also are different. Let’s see what are the odds in Baccarat and Blackjack.
The odds of winning at blackjack can be as high as 42.22%. But this does not mean the house will win 57.78% of the time. Because there is a third possible result that is a push. Usually, 8.48% of blackjack games end in a push, this means there is a probability of a loss at 49.10%.
However, as I mentioned earlier, these odds can fluctuate. The odds depend on the blackjack variant, the rules for the player and the dealer, your playing style, and your level of blackjack knowledge.
For baccarat, the odds are solid and the rules are simple. As I mentioned before, this is the game of chance with a low house edge and you should not apply any complicated strategy. For these reasons, the odds of winning at a baccarat table are considerably higher than blackjack. For the player and banker’s hand, the payout is 1:1. But for the tie, the payout is 8:1 (sometimes 9:1).

Main Difference Between Baccarat and Blackjack
In live casinos, one of the significant differences you see is the minimum stakes. Baccarat is a high-rollers’ game. This means you have a much higher minimum bet. So, if you don’t have sufficient bankroll, a run of bad luck can hit you hard. But in casino blackjack games, the minimum stake is far lower, perhaps as much as only $5. Besides, in online casinos, you can play baccarat for much less.
If you ask me which game is better to play, you will not get an answer. Because this is your call. Both games are fun and have some advantages and disadvantages. If you like tactical games and you want to challenge your brain and apply strategies, Blackjack is an ideal option. But if you want to have some fun and burn some time and money, go to the Baccarat table. Some may say that blackjack is better. They argue that you have more control over the odds, in-depth strategy is involved in this game, you can lower the house edge to 0.5% with good rules and strategy, more game options are available with Blackjack, and more decisions are available on each hand. On the other hand, some are pro-baccarat and argue that it is superior to blackjack. Because it offers a combination that no other casino game can offer. It’s an easy game to play with a very simple strategy component and provides a high return to player number. Baccarat lovers believe that no other casino game comes close to this winning combination. So, trying out these games in safe casinos such as Betonline, Wild Casino or Super Slots is a perfect way to find out which ones you enjoy.
